Should I Still be worried about the Swine Flu H1N1 in the Mayan Riviera?

The simple answer is NO…Here are the facts (updated 9/2009)

·         GET PERSPECTIVE  Mexico is a large country; the state of Quintana Roo (Q. Roo) where Mayan Riviera is located is equal in size to West Virginia (approx. 20,000sq. miles) and a population of equal to Maine (1.25 Million). The Mayan Riviera ("Solidaridad" is the name of the County that Mayan Riviera is located) is a “small tiny” area of the large country of Mexico with a population of ONLY 135,000, think Fort Collins CO, Savannah GA or McAllen TX. So think twice when you hear a news report on “Mexico”, it’s doesn’t necessary have anything to do with the Mayan Rivera or Cancun (even though the New services just love to show a bikini on a beach whenever they talk about Mexico??), most of the "Mexican" news is about Mexico City (think NYC or LA) so if you were living in say McAllen TX; How much of what went on NYC has anything to do with you?

  • THE H1N1 NUMBERS (9/19)

    • Confirmed Cases
                               USA - 125,178
                               Mexico - 27,085
                               Quintana Roo - 514
    •   Deaths
                               USA - 632
                               Mexico - 202
Quintana Roo - 1(in the state capital of Chetumal – 2.5 hours away from the Mayan Riviera)

    • H1N1 New cases in Quintana Roo – ONLY 2 since August. The cases in the area did go up in July when school let out but went back down in August when School resumed.

·         I live here in the Mayan Riviera and am more afraid of getting the H1N1 flu when I go back to the USA for a visit than living here. In our small area of Mexico the flu is in the decline and it has been, and in truth it never was running rampant here, I don't know anybody who had it, my friends with kids in school don't know anyone whom has had it. I know the news made it sound like Cancun was the epidictic center of the flu, people were dropping sick like flies, but honestly it was not like that, we did not know what to think because no one here was sick! The Cancun newspapers said that after investigation most of the tourist that were sick were thought of catching the flu on flights connecting threw Mexico City or from Cancun airport personnel working both in Cancun and Mexico City, made since to me because I sure was not seeing it. My husband and I were in China when this broke out we got of of China by the skin of our teeth (they quarantined people that arrived from Mexican flights for weeks in China.) The fact is we had been in Southeast Asia for 3 weeks (cooking classes) and had not been in Mexico City for years (so how could we have it?)... we got back to our home here in the Mayan Riviera thinking we would find everyone sick (we only had CNN ASIA or internet News), and to our surprise we found that nothing had happened and still has not happened.  The Mexican Government has a huge campaign to educate the community on precautions that should be taken to stop transferring of the flu, hotels, resorts and restaurants have all had to participate, the campaign is on TV, in the Schools and on Highway Signs. The Swine flu has really hurt the area; it has put 1000’s of people out of work. No one here is going to be lazy about maintaining preventative measures and practice good hygiene in their establishments and to educate their staffs. The Swine flu has hurt the area’s economy more than any hurricane in the past, and we are all determined to do everything in our power to change public perception.

So if the World Heath Origination has traveled to Cancun/Mayan Riviera why shouldn’t you?
